Sonia Sotomayor is an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, the Court's 111th justice, its third female justice, and its first Hispanic justice.
When President Barack Obama announced his nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to be the next Supreme Court Justice, Plus Three mobilized a national campaign to support her historic nomination. Working with a coalition of Latino leaders and organizations, Plus Three launched a website, SotomayorForJustice.com, to share information and mobilize support around Judge Sotomayor. The focus was to distribute information on Judge Sotomayor’s background and exceptional qualifications to be a Supreme Court justice. The site was also used to bust myths disseminated by opponents of her nomination to the high court.
Plus Three created a dynamic web presence designed to engage both local and national advocates by providing toolkits and resources for supporters to implement their own local campaigns. The site featured the latest news on Judge Sotomayor’s confirmation process, daily news clips, online advocacy tools, and biographical information. In addition, the website was equipped with databases so supporters could easily contact local media and their elected officials about Judge Sotomayor's nomination.
Plus Three designed the site to be the ultimate resource for the public on Judge Sotomayor’s qualifications and judicial record. National media outlets reported on and referred to the website, and bloggers posted links to the site throughout the confirmation hearings.
The coalition that was facilitated by the site provided key support for Senators who backed the nomination, while urging Senators on the fence to support Sotomayor. The campaign was a success and the history-making confirmation of Judge Sotomayor smashed another barrier that had stood in the way of Hispanic Americans.
